CANDLE CARE

Get the most from your candles

Here at Vintage Wings Wax Boutique, we handcraft candles using natural wooden wicks. The wicks are hypnotising and will show different charms and characteristics than cotton wicks.

To get the most from your candles, here are some simple steps to ensure that there is no wastage and you get a perfect burn every time with no tunnelling.

Step One – Safety First

Your candle must always be placed on a flat, heat resistant surface, away from drafts and other heat sources. NEVER leave a candle unattended whilst burning or hot after being extinguished until it is fully cooled. Keep candles out of reach of children, pets, other heat sources and anything that could catch fire with a naked flame. You must never move a candle whilst it is burning or until it is fully cooled. Do not pour or remove wax whilst it is liquified as this will be detrimental to the longevity and enjoyment of your candle.

Whilst we want you to love your candles as much as we love making them for you, candles are dangerous unless safe and strict procedures are adhered to. Your safety is paramount when using home fragranced items that have a naked flame.

Step Two – Candle Longevity

Always ensure that you get a full melt pool across your candle on every burn, especially the first one as this will help to avoid tunnelling, this creates excess wax on the side of the candle vessel causing wastage and poor burn quality. Light the wooden wick and allow the flame to naturally flow across the full length of the wick. Making sure that the wax makes its way across the whole diameter of the vessel before you safely extinguish it. This full burn time will differ from vessel to vessel however for best results a burn time of between 2.5 – 4.5 hours is optimum for protecting the candle from tunnelling.

The height of the flame may show variations and it may seem to be self-extinguishing, however this is normal. At times it may have a lower flame, do not worry this is normal and the candle will continue to heat. If the flame does not return, re light and to ensure the full melt pool is achieved.

Step Three – The Wick Trim

Trimming your wooden wick is a simple task that should be carried out as and when required to ensure that the flame does not exceed 25mm or begin to smoke. Trimming the wick is simple with wooden wicks and can be done once the candle is safely extinguished and cooled either carefully break of the edges or trim with wick scissors so that the wick is around 6mm in height. Discard these tiny wood wick fragments onto a tissue before relighting the candle.

Step Four – The End Of Your Candle

Once there is 6mm of wax at the bottom of your vessel its time to say goodbye. All our vessels are works of art in their own right. Wash with warm soapy water and re-use as containers for succulents, make up brushes, cotton wool, a simple ornament, the list is endless. Don’t waste their beauty by popping them in the recycling bin.

Please remember as beautiful as candles are with the positivity and atmosphere that they create, candles are dangerous if not used safely and with caution.

Please note as we use natural vegan wax, discolouration is perfectly normal and does not impair the candle scent or safety in any way.

Kindest Regards
